In a markedly cordial meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Canada’s new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, both leaders struck a cooperative tone despite lingering tensions over sovereignty, trade, and recent political rhetoric.

During the bilateral sit-down on Tuesday—their first since Carney’s election victory last week—the two men shared compliments and laughter, a sharp contrast to the icy relationship Trump had with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whom he often derided as “Governor Trudeau.”

Carney, a former central banker, used a real estate metaphor to firmly reject any suggestion that Canada could one day become part of the United States.

“As you know from real estate, there are some places that are never for sale,” Carney said.

Trump, nodding in agreement, replied, “That’s true.”

“We’re sitting in one right now,” Carney continued. “Canada is not for sale and won’t ever be for sale.”

The exchange, while lighthearted in tone, came amid deepening concerns in Canada over U.S. intentions. Trump had previously floated the idea—widely seen as provocative—of Canada becoming the 51st U.S. state. The remark drew fierce backlash north of the border and is believed to have contributed to the rise of anti-American sentiment that boosted Carney’s Liberal Party in the recent federal election.

Speaking to journalists before a closed-door meeting, Trump said, “It takes two to tango” regarding the idea of Canadian statehood, but added that “we’re not going to discuss it unless somebody wants to discuss it.”

Despite past friction, the leaders sought to emphasize common ground. Trump called Carney “a man I have a lot of respect for,” while Carney praised the U.S. president’s hospitality and leadership.

“We’re going to be friends with Canada,” Trump said. “That’s something I hope will never change.”

The meeting took place just over a week after Carney delivered a pointed victory speech, directly referencing Trump’s previous comments. “President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us,” Carney declared to a cheering crowd. “That will never, ever happen.”

In a Truth Social post ahead of the meeting, Trump struck a familiar tone:
“We don’t need their Cars, we don’t need their Energy, we don’t need their Lumber, we don’t need ANYTHING they have, other than their friendship, which hopefully we will always maintain,” he wrote. “They, on the other hand, need EVERYTHING from us! The Prime Minister will be arriving shortly and that will be, most likely, my only question of consequence.”
