The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to extend the current retirement age of 65 years or 40 years of service to all categories of civil servants across the country.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, made the demand on Thursday during the 2025 May Day celebration held at Eagle Square, Abuja, where he presented the union’s key policy expectations.

“It is imperative to extend the revised retirement age of 65 years or 40 years of service—currently enjoyed by teachers, health professionals, and judges—to all public servants,” Ajaero said.

He argued that a uniform retirement policy would foster fairness, improve morale among government workers, and boost overall efficiency in public service delivery.

In a previous interview with  in 2023, Ajaero had reaffirmed the NLC’s commitment to pushing for dialogue with President Bola Tinubu’s administration on the retirement age policy.

The retirement age extension is already being implemented for teachers nationwide, following a law enacted during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. The NLC is now advocating for the same treatment to be applied to all public service employees, regardless of their department or cadre.
