Justice Chile Eboe-Osuji, a distinguished Nigerian jurist and former President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), has officially joined the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ). He was sworn in on Tuesday, 15th April by Trinidad and Tobago’s President, Christine Kangaloo, during a ceremony at the President’s House in Port of Spain.

President Kangaloo, who administered the oath, described Justice Eboe-Osuji as a “brilliant legal mind and a gifted jurist,” and affirmed that his appointment would be of immense benefit to the Caribbean region. She praised his impeccable track record and alignment with the CCJ’s core values of integrity, excellence, and justice.

“Justice Eboe-Osuji and the CCJ are a perfect match,” Kangaloo remarked. “In this union, one might even join with the Psalmist and muse that ‘Mercy and truth have met together; Righteousness and peace have kissed each other.’”

She commended the Regional Judicial and Legal Services Commission for what she called an “excellent choice,” saying the new judge would have no trouble advancing the legacy of his predecessor, Justice Andrew Burgess.

Addressing Eboe-Osuji directly, President Kangaloo added, “May you continue to blaze a trail of excellence from the bench you now join. Once again, I offer you and your family my warmest congratulations and wish you every success as you assume office in the region’s premier homegrown judicial institution.”

Justice Eboe-Osuji brings a wealth of international legal experience to the CCJ. He served as President of the ICC from 2018 to 2021 and previously held several roles at the United Nations, including as Legal Advisor to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

At the UN, he led human rights interventions in high-profile cases and submitted amicus briefs to the European Court of Human Rights and the United States Supreme Court. He was also the Principal Appeals Counsel in the Charles Taylor prosecution at the Special Court for Sierra Leone and held senior roles at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

Before his international service, Eboe-Osuji practiced law in Nigeria and Canada, appearing before trial courts and appellate courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada. He has also taught international criminal law as an adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa and has authored numerous scholarly works.

Eboe-Osuji holds a PhD in international criminal law from the University of Amsterdam, an LLM from McGill University, and an LLB from the University of Calabar. He was called to the Bar in Nigeria (1986), Ontario and British Columbia, Canada (1992).

His mentors over the years include eminent legal figures such as Chief Mike Ahamba SAN (Nigeria), David W. Scott QC (Canada), and Dr. Christopher Harvey QC (Canada).
