A prominent Catholic priest in the Nsukka Diocese of Enugu State, Rev. Fr. Paul Obayi, has announced the relinquishment of his adoration land and associated properties to former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

Fr. Obayi, the Spiritual Director of the Okunerere Adoration Ministry, Nsukka, made the announcement during his homily at the ministry’s adoration ground on Palm Sunday. The development follows months of controversy and conflict surrounding the ownership and demolition of parts of the adoration premises.

The priest recounted how, a month prior, a woman identified as Princess Monica Otta from Abia State, accompanied by security operatives, allegedly led a demolition exercise targeting an extension of the prayer ground. The incident affected several structures, including a water factory which Fr. Obayi said was valued at over ₦300 million.

Reflecting on the ordeal, he accused the Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, Geoffrey Onah, and fellow priests of abandoning him during the crisis. He expressed disappointment over the silence of the diocesan leadership, noting that despite multiple attempts to reach out, including text messages and a formal letter, he received no response.

“The woman told me, ‘You must be fighting alone. Your bishop is not with you. All the priests are not with you.’ Till today, my bishop has not called me,” Obayi told his congregation. “No priest has been strong enough to speak against the evil. What I’m telling my fellow priests is that the partridge will be roasted the same way the cock was roasted.”

Fr. Obayi further stated that he has decided to vacate the contested land and hand it over to Ugwuanyi, who was governor at the time he acquired part of the property.

“Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi did well for me by giving me this land. I’m going to give him a gift. I’m going to hand over this land to Ugwuanyi. He is now the owner of this place,” he declared.

In addition to the land, the priest announced he would also transfer ownership of several structures and assets to the former governor, including the partially demolished water factory, borehole, fencing, residential buildings, the crucifix, and the statue of the Virgin Mary.

“They claim the land is theirs, and so be it,” he concluded.
