Pascal Dozie, a towering figure in Nigeria’s banking and telecommunications sectors, has passed away at the age of 85.

Mr. Dozie died on April 8, according to a statement issued by his son, Uzoma Dozie. Describing him as a “devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a man of unwavering Catholic faith,” Uzoma said the family was announcing his passing “with deep sorrow, but with gratitude to God for a life well spent.”

“His life was marked by service — to God, his family, and his country,” the statement added.

Best known as the founder of Diamond Bank, Mr. Dozie established the institution in 1990, leading it to become one of Nigeria’s most innovative banks. He remained at the helm until his retirement, handing over leadership to his son, Uzoma, who served as CEO until Diamond Bank’s merger with Access Bank in 2019.

Mr. Dozie also played a pivotal role in the development of Nigeria’s telecommunications industry. As the pioneer chairman of MTN Nigeria, he guided the telecoms giant through its formative years after the sector’s liberalisation in the early 2000s. Under his stewardship, MTN grew rapidly to become Nigeria’s largest mobile network, symbolising the country’s digital transformation.

Born on April 9, 1939, in Egbu, Owerri, Imo State, Mr. Dozie pursued his early education at Our Lady’s School, Emekuku, before advancing to the London School of Economics, where he earned a degree in economics. He later obtained a master’s degree in administrative science from City University, London.

Renowned for his humility, vision, and integrity, Mr. Dozie’s contributions to national development earned him widespread acclaim, including the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

Beyond his professional pursuits, Mr. Dozie was a respected boardroom statesman who served on numerous corporate and public boards, helping shape corporate governance during Nigeria’s economic liberalisation era.

He is survived by his wife, Chinyere, his children, grandchildren, and a host of admirers inspired by his leadership and legacy.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
