The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the death of a pedestrian following a multiple-vehicle crash involving a truck conveying two containers and seven other vehicles along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Lagos, on Saturday.

In a statement issued by the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the agency disclosed that two other individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries in the ghastly accident, which occurred at Cele Bus Stop, inward Oshodi.

According to Bakare-Oki, the crash involved a fully loaded 40-foot articulated truck, five commercial buses, and two private vehicles.

He explained that preliminary investigations revealed the truck, while conveying two large containers, suffered a brake failure at high speed. The driver lost control of the vehicle, causing the containers to dislodge and collapse onto the five commercial buses and two private cars, resulting in significant structural damage and human casualties.

“One of the commercial bus drivers sustained multiple fractures to his arm and leg, while the remaining injured victims were promptly evacuated by LASAMBUS to the General Hospital, Isolo, for immediate and comprehensive treatment,” Bakare-Oki stated.

He added that officers of LASTMA responded swiftly to the scene, initiating rescue operations in collaboration with the LASEMA Response Unit (LRU), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and sympathetic members of the public.

“Their combined efforts ensured the timely extraction of the wounded and the restoration of vehicular movement along the severely impacted expressway,” he said.

Bakare-Oki also noted that security personnel from the Ijesha-Tedo Police Division were deployed to maintain order and provide tactical support throughout the emergency response.

The LASTMA boss extended his profound condolences to the bereaved family and wished the injured victims a swift recovery.
