A 25-year-old member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has tragically died of Lassa fever at a secondary health facility in Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The female corps member, who had fallen ill while in Ondo State, was brought to the health facility on March 18, 2025, but passed away later the same day. This information was confirmed in a statement released by Ogun State’s Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, on Wednesday.

Coker confirmed the outbreak of Lassa fever in the state, stating, “Ogun State has confirmed a case of Lassa Fever and as such declared a Lassa fever outbreak. The index case is a 25-year-old female National Youth Corp member who fell sick while in Ondo State and was brought to one of our secondary health facilities in Ijebu North LGA on 18th March 2025 and later died the same day.”

Lassa fever is a viral hemorrhagic disease that presents with symptoms including high-grade fever, headache, general body weakness, sore throat, muscle pain, cough, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, chest pain, and unexplained bleeding from the ears, eyes, nose, mouth, and other body openings.

Coker urged members of the community to report to the hospital if they notice any of these symptoms, emphasizing that any case of febrile illness that does not respond to 48 hours of anti-malaria or antibiotic treatment should raise suspicion for Lassa fever.

She also advised all health facilities in Ogun State, both public and private, to step up infection prevention and control measures and ensure compliance by all healthcare workers. Healthcare workers suspecting Lassa fever in a patient are encouraged to contact their local government disease surveillance and notification officer (LGA DSNO) or the State Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer at 0703-421-4893, or the State Epidemiologist at 0808-425-0881.

The commissioner reassured the public of the Ogun State government’s commitment to safeguarding citizens’ health through ongoing surveillance and rapid responses to infectious diseases. She further noted that the ministry, in collaboration with the Rapid Response Team at Ijebu North East, is actively managing the situation with enhanced surveillance and community engagement to ensure an effective response.
