Toronto authorities have charged a 31-year-old man, Adimabua Chukwuka, with first-degree murder in connection with the death of a homeless man, Mario Ferreira. Chukwuka was arrested last Friday by the Toronto Police Service’s 52 Division following a public tip-off.

According to police reports, Ferreira, 60, was found unconscious near the University of Toronto campus and later pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators allege that Chukwuka violently attacked Ferreira using debris, possibly from a dumpster or construction site, while the victim lay on a bench in the early hours of March 20.

Detective Trevor Grieve, speaking on the case, stated, “We are committed to bringing justice to Mr. Ferreira and his loved ones. We urge anyone with additional information to come forward.”

Surveillance footage reportedly captured the brutal attack, showing Chukwuka repeatedly striking the victim before fleeing the scene. Authorities later released a photo of the suspect, leading to his swift apprehension and subsequent charge of first-degree murder.

Further investigations revealed Chukwuka’s history of violent offenses. In August 2014, he was charged with ten counts, including attempted murder and aggravated assault, in connection with multiple stabbings. In April 2022, he faced another set of ten charges for incidents involving knife attacks and robbery.

The outcome of Chukwuka’s previous criminal cases remains unclear. However, under Section 235(1) of the Canadian Criminal Code, a conviction for first-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence with no possibility of parole for at least 25 years.
