The Imo State Police Command has arrested a landlord for allegedly shooting a schoolboy, Paul, who jumped into his compound to retrieve a football during a game.

The incident occurred on Monday at Urban Secondary School, Area N, World Bank Housing Estate, Owerri. Paul and his schoolmates were playing football when the ball bounced into the landlord’s compound. In an attempt to retrieve it, Paul jumped into the property, and the landlord allegedly shot him in the waist, leaving him critically injured.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, confirmed the arrest. “The man has been arrested, and an investigation is ongoing. The victim is currently receiving treatment at the hospital,” he stated.

Paul’s guardian, Jonathan Odikanwa, expressed deep concern about the boy’s health. He said his priority is Paul’s survival rather than escalating the issue.

“The X-ray showed that there is no bullet in his body, but doctors are puzzled by his inability to pass bowel movements. He is scheduled for surgery so they can examine what is causing the problem,” Odikanwa explained.

“The only thing I ask for now is prayers for his survival. He has been crying for water, but the doctors are still trying to determine the cause of his condition. Until after the surgery, I don’t want to say much—just pray for my son to pull through.”

Paul has lived with the Odikanwa family for the past eight years and is a JSS 1 student at Urban Secondary School, Owerri. His condition remains critical as medical personnel work to stabilize him.
