The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has summoned MultiChoice Nigeria to explain its planned subscription price increase, which is set to take effect on March 1, 2025.

This move comes in response to concerns raised about recurrent price hikes, potential market dominance abuse, and anti-competitive practices within the pay-TV industry.

In accordance with its powers under Sections 32 and 33 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA), the FCCPC has instructed MultiChoice Nigeria’s CEO to attend an investigative hearing at the Commission’s headquarters on Thursday, February 27, 2025.

The price hike has sparked widespread concern among Nigerian consumers, who are already grappling with rising costs. The FCCPC’s inquiry will scrutinize whether MultiChoice’s actions are fair and in line with market regulations, particularly in light of accusations that the company applies different pricing strategies in other markets.

The Commission has stressed that if MultiChoice fails to provide adequate justifications for the price adjustment or is found to be engaging in unfair practices, regulatory penalties, sanctions, or other corrective measures will be enforced to protect Nigerian consumers.

The FCCPC is also working closely with the sector regulator and other relevant agencies to ensure the protection of consumers and promote fair competition within Nigeria’s broadcasting and digital subscription landscape.
