Canada’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has reaffirmed that seeking asylum does not grant an automatic exemption from immigration laws.

The agency emphasized that asylum seekers must provide verifiable evidence of serious harm or persecution in their home countries to qualify for protection and avoid deportation.

The IRCC clarified that the asylum system is designed to protect individuals facing threats such as torture, persecution, and inhumane treatment, not as a fast-track route into Canada.

In a statement, the immigration authority highlighted the rigorous screening process for asylum seekers, which includes:
✅ Health, criminal, and security background checks
✅ Medical examinations
✅ Biometric data collection (fingerprints and photos)
✅ Submission of concrete evidence of persecution and risks in their home country
✅ Declaration of any representative assisting with the application

The IRCC also warned that providing false information on an asylum claim is considered misrepresentation, which could lead to an automatic refusal and removal from Canada.

“It can take a long time to get a final decision on your asylum claim,” the statement added. “There’s no guarantee that you will be allowed to stay in Canada.”
