Former Military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) has publicly expressed regret over the annulment of the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election, acknowledging that the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola won the vote.

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday at the launch of his autobiography, “A Journey in Service,” Babangida admitted full responsibility for the controversial decision that denied Abiola his mandate.

“I regret June 12. I accept full responsibility for the decisions taken, and June 12 happened under my watch. Mistakes, missteps happened in quick succession,” he stated.

His comments mark a significant departure from his previous defenses of the annulment. In past interviews, IBB had justified the decision, arguing that Nigeria was not ready for a transition to civilian rule at the time.

However, in his book, Babangida acknowledged the credibility of the election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest. Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who reviewed the book, quoted Babangida as saying:

“Although I am on record to have stated after the election that Abiola may not have won, upon deeper reflection and closer examination of all available facts, particularly the detailed election results published as an appendix to this book, there was no doubt that MKO Abiola won the June 12 election.”

Babangida further disclosed that his administration had intended to hold another election within six months after the annulment, citing security concerns as a key reason for not handing over immediately. He admitted that the backlash from the cancellation derailed those plans, eventually leading to the establishment of an Interim National Government (ING), which was later overthrown by General Sani Abacha.

The former military leader also expressed satisfaction that former President Muhammadu Buhari later recognized and honored Abiola with Nigeria’s highest national title, the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR).
