Three policemen serving at the Abia State Police Command have been dismissed over allegations of extortion and the abduction of unsuspecting victims along the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway.

Our correspondent gathered that the three policemen and two civilians were arrested by officers from the Abayi Division in Aba after they were found in possession of an electric baton, an assault rifle, and a Beretta pistol.

The suspects allegedly hired a minibus, abducted some civilians along the expressway, and threatened to harm them while demanding money from their families for their release.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Abia Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, who confirmed the dismissal of the three policemen, disclosed that they were found guilty after an orderly room trial initiated by the command. The trial confirmed their involvement in the unprofessional conduct.

The PPRO stated: “As a result, the public is hereby notified that:

  • Force No. 501356 Sergeant Jonas Nnamdi, attached to the Area Command, Aba;
  • Force No. 511844 Corporal James Daniel, attached to the Department of Operations, Umuahia; and
  • Force No. 511853 Corporal Ifeanyi Emeka, attached to Eziama Division,

have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) effective today, 07/02/2025. They have been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for prosecution alongside their civilian accomplices.

“This action follows the administrative disciplinary measures taken by the command. Their official accoutrements have been retrieved by the Command’s Provost, and they cease to be members of the force.”

The PPRO further stated that the State Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, maintains a zero-tolerance policy for corruption and other unprofessional conduct, stressing that discipline and professionalism are the bedrock of the Nigeria Police Force.

She assured the public that the command does not condone the activities of bad eggs within the force and remains committed to the vision of the Inspector General of Police in ensuring a professionally competent, service-driven, rule-of-law-compliant, and people-friendly police force.
