A routine court hearing in Albuquerque New Mexico turned into a violent brawl on Friday when a family member of the victim attacked the murder suspect, sparking chaos in the courtroom.

Alexander Ortiz, accused of murdering Alianna Farfan, was standing before a judge in the 2nd District Court when the victim’s uncle, Carlos Lucero, suddenly leaped over the courtroom gate and began punching Ortiz.

Courtroom video captured the moment as Ortiz and a nearby officer fell to the ground. A second man, identified as Pete Ysasi, joined the attack, while Ortiz’s father entered the fray to defend his son, throwing punches at both Lucero and Ysasi.

The altercation lasted nearly a minute before deputies intervened, restraining Lucero, Ysasi, and Ortiz’s father. Ortiz was escorted out of the courtroom as order was restored.

Lucero and Ysasi were later charged with felonies, including battery upon a peace officer and assault on a jail. According to court documents, Lucero justified his actions, stating, “He killed my niece like a coward… it was worth every moment.”

Ortiz’s father, however, claimed he was only trying to “break up the fight.”

Both Lucero and Ysasi were released on their own recognizance, while Ortiz’s plea hearing was rescheduled for Friday with heightened security measures in place.
