Shell Petroleum has reported an oil spill at Ogale, near Port Harcourt, following an overflow from a saver pit during flushing operations.

In a statement issued yesterday, the company confirmed that its spill response team swiftly contained the overflow and notified relevant authorities. Shell also disclosed that arrangements were being made for a regulator-led joint visit to assess the cause and impact of the spill.

Meanwhile, the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) provided further insight, stating that the spill occurred after an underground pit filled with crude began flowing into a pipeline separating an area of the Ogoni cleanup project.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over oil spills in the Niger Delta, a region plagued by decades of environmental degradation due to frequent pipeline leaks. These spills have severely impacted local communities, destroying livelihoods and posing health hazards to millions.

Authorities and environmental groups are expected to closely monitor the situation as investigations continue.
