A yet-to-be-identified officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) attached to the Lagos Division of the anti-graft agency has slumped and died. The incident occurred on Sunday in an undisclosed part of Lagos State.

The officer, who was not in uniform at the time of the incident, was confirmed dead after collapsing. A video circulating online shows the lifeless body of the officer surrounded by sympathizers, including police officers who conducted a search on the deceased’s bag. During the search, an EFCC identity card was discovered, confirming his affiliation with the commission.

A voice in the video could be heard saying, “He works with EFCC. His ID card is with him.”

Confirming the incident to newsmen on Monday, the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, stated that the officer’s death is under investigation.

“Yes, the man is our officer. His death is being investigated. The incident happened on Sunday,” Oyewale said.

This tragic incident comes barely two weeks after a suspected internet fraudster, Joshua Ikechukwu, shot an Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC, Aminu Salisu, during a raid in the Onitsha area of Anambra State. The operatives, who had traveled from the EFCC’s zonal headquarters in Enugu, were ambushed while attempting to apprehend a group of suspected cyber criminals.

Oyewale, who condemned negative narratives surrounding the officer’s killing, emphasized that the commission would ensure justice is served.

While the cause of the Lagos officer’s death remains unclear, the EFCC has assured the public that a thorough investigation is ongoing. The commission has yet to release further details about the deceased officer’s identity or the circumstances surrounding his collapse.
