Renowned activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has been granted bail by the Force Intelligence Department (FID) of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja.

The bail was announced on Monday, January 27, 2025, following Sowore’s engagement with the police over allegations including disobedience to lawful orders, obstructing public officers, cyberstalking, and acts allegedly intended to prevent arrests.

In a social media post, Sowore revealed that Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) of the FID, Dasuki Galandachi, informed him of the bail offer, which is pending the conclusion of an ongoing investigation. However, the activist has rejected one of the bail conditions, which required him to present a Level 17 Permanent Secretary as a surety.

Sowore stated, “I have rejected a bail condition asking me to present a Level 17 Permanent Secretary. Instead, I have offered to remain in police custody pending when the joke is over with.” He emphasized his commitment to preserving his innocence, dignity, and integrity, adding that he would not accept unreasonable conditions that compromise these principles.

“If such unreasonable conditions are imposed, I will choose to remain in detention until I am charged to court. Even then, I know that there is no crime defined or to be investigated. It is just the impunity that has become the hallmark of the PoliceNG hierarchy,” Sowore declared.

The activist also alleged that his arrest and detention were politically motivated, citing his vocal criticism of the tenure extension for Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun. Sowore claimed that the police intended to detain him and transfer him to Lagos for what he described as a “kangaroo trial.”

Sowore’s case has drawn significant attention from civil society organizations, human rights advocates, and the public, many of whom view his arrest as an attempt to silence dissent. His refusal to comply with what he deems unjust bail conditions has further galvanized support among his followers, who see his stance as a fight against systemic oppression and abuse of power.

As the investigation continues, Sowore remains resolute in his commitment to justice and accountability. “I will not be intimidated or coerced into accepting conditions that undermine my rights,” he stated.
