The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed an immediate and thorough investigation into allegations that seven senior police officers, including two Assistant Inspectors General (AIGs), engaged in the unethical practice of backdating their service records.

The officers under investigation are AIG Abdul Yari, AIG Idowu Owohunwa, AIG Ben Igwe, CP Peter Ukachi Opara, CP Obo Obo Ukani, DCP Simon Asamber Lough (SAN), and ACP Akpan Brown. They are accused of manipulating their records to falsely extend their tenures.

The probe was initiated following a letter dated January 6, 2025 from the civic group Integrity Youth Alliance. In a memo to the head of the IGP Monitoring Unit dated January 13th, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Force Secretary AIG Olofu Rhoda stated that the IGP has directed the unit to investigate and provide findings by January 20th.

The memo emphasized that “Force Entrant” is a scheme to upgrade deserving officers and does not constitute a fresh appointment or restart their tenure. It noted that under Public Service Rules, the accused officers cannot legally remain in service beyond the permitted period.

This investigation comes on the heels of the suspension of AIG Shuaya’u Lafia Abdulyari, who was also accused of altering his retirement records. The Police Service Commission approved his suspension effective January 9th pending determination of his case.

Integrity Youth Alliance has called on the IGP to enforce Public Service Rules regarding the mandatory retirement age of 60 years or 35 years of service. The group expressed hope that the police force under IGP Egbetokun’s leadership will maintain honesty and deal decisively with misconduct.
