DGSSIE forces successfully neutralized several Boko Haram attackers following an assault on the presidential palace in N’Djamena, Chad on Wednesday. The attack occurred less than two weeks after the country held a contested general election, which was marked by low turnout and opposition allegations of fraud.

A video circulating on social media shows elements of the terrorist group being shot at by the responding forces, with several attackers also taken into custody. Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that the attack was swiftly contained by Chadian security forces, and the situation is now under control. The DGSSIE, Chad’s Directorate General of Security Services and Internal Exile, demonstrated their efficiency in neutralizing the threat, ensuring the safety of government institutions and key personnel.

Authorities have not yet disclosed further details about the casualties, though reports suggest that a few of the attackers were captured alive, potentially providing valuable intelligence for future operations. Security has been heightened in the past few days, with the government switching off networks to prevent any suspected breach of security.

Sustained gunfire was heard Wednesday evening near the presidency in N’Djamena, according to AFP reporters. A security source said armed men had attacked the interior of the presidential compound, but authorities made no immediate comment. All roads leading to the presidency have been blocked, and tanks could be seen on the streets of the capital.

The attack took place against a backdrop of recurring attacks by the jihadist group Boko Haram in the Lake Chad region, the ending of a military accord with former colonial master France, and accusations that Chad was interfering in the conflict ravaging neighbouring Sudan. Several hours earlier on Tuesday, China’s foreign minister Wang Li met with President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno and other senior officials.

Chad, a former French colony, recently ended defence and security agreements with Paris, leading to the withdrawal of around a thousand French military personnel stationed in the country. France is now reconfiguring its military presence in Africa after being driven out of three Sahelian countries governed by juntas hostile to Paris — Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. Senegal and the Ivory Coast have also asked France to leave military bases on their territory.
