A suspected improvised explosive device (IED) detonated at an Islamiyyah school in the Kuchibiyu Community of Bwari Area Council, Abuja, on Monday, resulting in the death of one student and injuries to four others.

The incident occurred around noon, shortly after the school held a resumption assembly to welcome newly admitted students who had resumed on January 3, 2025. According to eyewitness reports, the deceased student was carrying the explosive device when it detonated, causing widespread panic within the school and the surrounding community.
Emergency responders, including a police bomb disposal squad, quickly arrived at the scene to assess the situation and provide assistance. The injured students were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment, while authorities began investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
As of press time, it remains unclear how the student obtained the suspected explosive device, and the Federal Capital Territory Police Command has not issued an official statement regarding the incident. Efforts to contact the police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, have been unsuccessful.
The tragic event has raised concerns about the security measures in place at schools and the potential risks associated with explosive materials falling into the hands of minors. The community is now calling for a thorough investigation into the matter and the implementation of stricter security protocols to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
