Tragedy struck on New Year’s Day in Amaimo community, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, when a Catholic priest allegedly shot and killed a young boy during Mass at St. Columbus Catholic Church.

According to eyewitness reports, the unidentified boy threw knockouts (fireworks) into the church premises during the January 1st service. In response, the priest reportedly retrieved a firearm and shot the child, killing him.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community. Local residents expressed outrage over the priest’s actions. “It is unacceptable for a clergy member to take a life, especially a child, no matter the provocation,” stated one man who wished to remain anonymous. Many are calling for the suspect’s arrest and a full investigation.

The Imo State Police Command confirmed the shooting on Thursday. Public Relations Officer Henry Okoye announced that a detailed inquiry is underway to uncover all facts related to the case. “Further developments will be communicated as the investigation unfolds,” Okoye declared in an official statement.

As of publication, the identities of the priest and victim have not been released pending family notification. Community members plan to hold a candlelight vigil outside St. Columbus Church this weekend in remembrance of the slain child and to pray for justice.
