The family of 35-year-old poultry farmer Jimoh AbdulQodir Tunji is demanding answers after he died in the custody of the Kwara State Police Command on Friday, December 20, 2024.

Tunji’s relatives accuse police officers of torturing him to death following his arrest over an alleged debt of N220,000 owed to his employer.

In a heart-wrenching video that surfaced online, Tunji’s grieving mother tearfully lamented, “My son did not kill anyone. He only owed someone. They have killed my son.” She alleged that the police beat her son to death, preventing the family from seeing him and causing blood to gush from his nose.

The Kwara State Police Command spokesperson, Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, confirmed that Tunji had been invited by the police over allegations of obtaining money under false pretenses. She stated that an investigation into the cause of his death was underway and assured that no stone would be left unturned.

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun met with the bereaved family on Sunday and instructed the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID) to take over the investigation. The IGP expressed his condolences and reassured the family of a conclusive and impartial investigation.

Tragically, this incident marks the third case in less than five months where Kwara State police officers have been implicated in the deaths of suspects in custody. In recent months, officers were allegedly involved in the deaths of 27-year-old asthmatic patient Suleiman Olayinka and Kwara State Polytechnic student Ishola Abdulqoyum.

The Nigeria Police Force has pledged its commitment to upholding the highest standards of accountability, professionalism, and respect for human rights as investigations into these troubling incidents continue. The nation awaits justice for the families of those who have lost their lives in police custody.
