A stampede during the Obijackson Foundation’s Annual Rice Sharing event at the Amaranta Stadium in Okija, Anambra State, has claimed the lives of an unconfirmed number of residents, mostly women.

The tragic incident occurred on Saturday morning, turning a charitable tradition into a somber event.

Videos circulating on social media depict a disturbing scene, with lifeless bodies strewn on the ground in the aftermath of the stampede. Some victims have been transported to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment, but the full extent of casualties remains unknown at this time.

In a press release dated December 21, 2024, the Obijackson Foundation expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, extending condolences to Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, the bereaved families, and the entire Okija community. The Foundation stated, “This tragedy breaks our hearts. The Annual Rice Sharing event is a labor of love, aimed at bringing joy and relief to those in need. That it resulted in such sorrow is devastating beyond words.”

The Foundation pledged to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident thoroughly and implement enhanced safety measures for future events. They also commended the swift response of security personnel and rescue workers, whose efforts helped mitigate the impact of the tragedy.

Known for its philanthropic initiatives across Anambra State, the Obijackson Foundation has been synonymous with hope and generosity for years. The Annual Rice Sharing event has become a vital lifeline for many families in Okija, reflecting the Foundation’s dedication to ensuring that no one is left behind during the festive season.

The Anambra State Government has acknowledged the incident and is actively monitoring the situation. Charles Aburime, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, stated that an official statement would be released shortly to address the tragedy and provide further details.

This devastating event comes on the heels of another recent stampede in Ibadan, Oyo State, where over 35 people, primarily children, lost their lives during a carnival just days ago. The Anambra incident also marks the second rice distribution-related disaster in Nigeria this year, following a similar tragedy at Nasarawa State University in Keffi last March, which claimed the lives of several students.

As the nation grapples with yet another heartbreaking loss of life, questions are being raised about the safety measures and crowd control tactics employed during such large-scale public events.
