Confusion erupted in Kano as security operatives took control of the Emir’s palace this morning .

The reason for the heightened security presence remains unclear, but unconfirmed reports suggest it may be related to Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II’s scheduled address to economists regarding tax reform bills or an attempt to prevent him from accompanying his newly appointed Wamban Kano and District Head of Bichi, Munir Sanusi, to assume his official district post in Bichi.

Sources from the palace speculated that the security presence could be connected to the Emir’s planned meeting with economists to discuss the proposed tax reform bills. The development led to restricted movement in and out of the palace, with police vehicles blocking the entrance.

Eyewitnesses reported that numerous thugs were prevented from entering the palace, and gunshots from the police were heard in the vicinity. It is believed that the Emir has left the palace amid the confusion.

The incident may also be related to the Emir’s planned trip to Bichi town, where his Chief of Staff, Munnir Sanusi, is set to assume the role of district head for the first time since the dissolution of the emirate.

According to the source, Emir Sanusi II was, however, asked to remain indoors by heavily armed security operatives while the entrance of the Palace was also blocked by armoured personnel carrier (APC) vehicles.

“The Emir has been on the phone and is trying to find out what is going on,” the source was quoted as saying.

Also, another source in the Kano State government told the newspaper that, the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusif, sent a delegation to the palace but they were also barricaded from entering the palace by the security operatives.

The venue of the event, which Emir Sanusi II, was scheduled attend in Bichi has also been condoned off by security operatives.

Kano has been embroiled in an emirship tussle since Sanusi’s reinstatement in May. The situation remains tense, and authorities have not yet provided an official statement regarding the security presence at the palace.
