Edo State Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo swore in three judges on Friday who had been overlooked by the previous administration of Godwin Obaseki. The ceremony, held at the Festival Hall in Government House, fulfilled a promise made by Okpebholo in his inaugural speech to right this wrong.

The three judges – Ojo Maureen Osa, Okundamiya Godwin Jeff, and Edoghogho Eboigbe – had been cleared and recommended for appointment by the National Judicial Council (NJC) in June 2023 along with five of their colleagues. However, while Obaseki swore in the other five judges in May of this year, these three were passed over for unknown reasons.

“No one should be discriminated, marginalized, or hated for personal reasons, or on account of not having a godfather,” Okpebholo stated at the swearing-in. He emphasized that as judges of the state High Court, they are expected to “uphold high standards of conduct, ensure fair dispute resolution, uphold the rights of citizens, and bring culprits to justice.”

On behalf of her fellow appointees, Justice Ojo Maureen Osa expressed gratitude to Okpebholo for the opportunity to serve and for making their appointments a priority within his first three weeks in office. “We assure you that we will dispense justice without fear or favor,” she pledged.

The swearing-in of these three judges, eleven months after their initial recommendation by the NJC, aims to strengthen the critical role of the judiciary in Edo State under the doctrine of separation of powers. Governor Okpebholo has signaled a commitment to fairness and due process with this early action in his new administration.
