The Federal High Court of Nigeria has released details for its upcoming Legal Year Ceremonies to mark the commencement of the 2024/2025 judicial calendar.

The events will take place from December 2-3, 2024 in Abuja.

The ceremonies will begin with a Legal Year Devotional Worship on Monday, December 2nd at 10:00 AM prompt. The Christian service will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 36 Aguiyi Ironsi Street, Maitama, while the Muslim prayers will take place simultaneously at the National Mosque on Sani Abacha Way.

Later that afternoon at 1:00 PM, a Special Legal Year Court Session will be convened at Ukeje Hall in the Federal High Court Complex on Shehu Shagari Way in Abuja. The session marks the official opening of the court for the new legal year.

On Tuesday, December 3rd, the 40th Annual Federal High Court Judges’ Conference will open at 10:00 AM, also at Ukeje Hall. The conference brings together judges from across Nigeria’s federal high court system for deliberations and continuing education.

The Legal Year Ceremonies are an annual tradition in Nigeria, symbolically closing one year of court activities while ushering in the next. The occasion is marked with prayer services, ceremonial court sittings, and addresses reviewing the past year and setting priorities for the one ahead.

Chief Judge Tsoho I. Tsoho is expected to preside over this year’s ceremonies. Attendance is by invitation, with political leaders, senior judicial officials, leaders of the bar, and other dignitaries participating in the events.
