Residents of Festac Town in Lagos State have petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) over alleged disregard for the rule of law by officials of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA).

The residents, represented by their lawyer, Mr. Adetayo Bello, accuse the FHA of continuing to demolish properties in Festac Extension 6th Avenue despite a valid court injunction restraining further demolitions.

The petition specifically names Akintola Olagbenro, the Zonal Manager of the FHA, along with two individuals, Chief Chuka Umenne and Coach Sesi, as being complicit in these actions. The residents allege that these officials have engaged in a “criminal abuse of power that can endanger public peace.”

On September 11, 2023, a Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja granted a restraining order against the FHA in favor of the Festac residents. The injunction, issued by Justice O. Awope in suit No: ID/7397GCM/2023, restrained the FHA and its agents from demolishing buildings in Festac Town’s 6th Avenue or other areas pending the determination of the substantive suit.

Despite this court order, the residents claim that the FHA has continued to carry out demolitions in the area. In their petition, they state, “This act not only represents a contempt of court but also a criminal abuse of power that can endanger public peace.”

The residents are calling for urgent action by the Nigeria Police Force to investigate the FHA Zonal Manager and his associates for contempt of court. They demand measures to prevent further illegal demolitions and ensure the protection of their rights and properties.

This situation highlights the ongoing tension between residents and the FHA in Festac Town, as well as the importance of adhering to court orders and the rule of law. The outcome of this petition and the police investigation will be closely watched by residents and concerned citizens alike.

As the matter unfolds, it remains to be seen how the authorities will respond to the residents’ demands and whether the alleged contempt of court by FHA officials will be addressed. The residents hope that their petition to the IGP will lead to a swift resolution and the protection of their rights and properties in Festac Town.
