The Cross River Judicial Service Commission has taken decisive action against judicial misconduct by suspending four magistrates and several staff members for corruption and various forms of judicial malpractice. The suspensions were announced on Thursday by Peter Ene, the commission’s secretary.

The suspended magistrates are:
– Ushie Ushang of Port Court, Calabar
– Gabriel Ebebe of Chief Magistrate Court, Edor
– Gabriel Agana of Chief Magistrate Court, Effraya, Ikom
– Shadrach Orji of Chief Magistrates Court 1, Ogoja

According to Ene, the magistrates were found guilty of offenses including corruption, falsification of records, incompetence, drunkenness while on duty, and neglect of official responsibilities. Two additional magistrates were issued stern warnings for misconduct.

In addition to the magistrates, three judicial staff members were suspended without pay and a Chief Bailiff received a warning letter. The suspended magistrates have been instructed to hand over all pending cases to their court registrars and the administrative chief magistrate in Calabar.

“The decision to suspend these judicial officers and staff is in line with the Cross River Public Service Rules, Section 3, Rule 03305, 2004,” Ene stated. “The Judicial Service Commission is committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity and ensuring any staff guilty of misconduct faces appropriate sanctions. This is essential for maintaining public trust in our judicial system.”
