The Indigenous People of Biafra’s (IPOB) Stay-At-Home order, declared in protest of their leader Nnamdi Kanu’s continued detention, turned violent yesterday, resulting in the death of three members of the Ukpo Community Vigilance Services (AVS) and one person in Abatete Community.

The incident occurred in the early hours of the day when gunmen stormed Ukpo Dunukofia Local Government Area, opening fire on members of the AVS. The attackers killed three vigilance personnel and set their operational vehicle ablaze before fleeing the scene. Seven people were injured in the attack, including the President General of Ukpo town, who narrowly escaped death but sustained bullet wounds.

An eyewitness reported that the gunmen arrived at the Ukpo Roundabout, shooting indiscriminately and chanting, “No Biafra, No Freedom,” causing people to run for safety. It is suspected that the AVS members were on their way to report to the President General when the incident occurred.

In a separate attack, gunmen also stormed Abatete Community in Idemili North Local Government Area, firing at community members and killing one person.

The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and stated that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ukpo Community is on the ground to investigate the incident and awaits a full report.

The attacks come just two weeks after Governor Charles Soludo ordered all markets in the state to remain open and not to comply with the Stay-At-Home order issued by the gunmen. Traders in Ukpo had complied with the governor’s directive before the incident.
