Suspected bandits have attacked farms in Kwaga village and Unguwar Zako in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Nigeria, setting fire to harvested maize on six farms.

The incident occurred on Sunday night, leaving the affected villagers and farm owners in shock and lamenting their losses.

According to a video clip shared by Daily Trust, the charred remains of the affected farms could be seen, with the owners consoling one another. The affected farmers include:

– Kabiru Halilu Kwaga: Had harvested over 160 bags of maize last year and was expecting an even larger harvest this year. All his crops were destroyed in the fire.
– Surajo Kwaga: Harvested 40 bags of maize from his farm last year, but lost his entire crop to the fire this year.
– Malam Dan Gido: Harvested 50 bags last year and was expecting about 65 bags this year. His hopes were dashed by the attack.
– Jibril Haladu Kwaga: Also lost his harvested maize in the incident.

The affected farmers prayed for divine consolation for their losses.

Ishaq Usman Kasai, Chairman of the Birnin Gwari-Niger Inter-boundaries Communities Association, confirmed the incident and stated that the bandits responsible for the destruction were part of a group led by the notorious kingpin Yellow Jamboros, who has been terrorizing communities in the area.

The Kaduna State government had yet to make an official statement on the incident at the time of reporting. Attempts to reach the state police command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansir Hassan, were unsuccessful.

Banditry and attacks on farming communities have been a recurring problem in parts of Nigeria, often leading to loss of lives, property, and livelihoods.
