A workshop themed “Breaking Leadership Barriers for Women in the Legal Profession” brought together prominent female judges and lawyers from across Southeast Nigeria in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

The event aimed to enhance the lives and careers of young female lawyers while exploring strategies to overcome obstacles women face in attaining leadership roles in the judiciary.
Nigeria’s Chief Justice, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, attended the meeting alongside other top judicial figures including the chief judges of Abia, Anambra, Enugu and Imo states. Host Governor Dr. Alex Otti pledged Abia State’s full support for women judges in his opening remarks.
“This workshop invites us to come together and shatter the glass ceiling that limits the ascendancy of women to leadership positions in the legal profession in our country,” Governor Otti said. “We have a golden opportunity to identify policies, practices and conventions that can become very strong obstacles to the rise of women.”
Justice Kekere-Ekun’s recent elevation as Nigeria’s Chief Justice seemed to perfectly coincide with the event’s mission. She encouraged women judges to “explore strategies to overcome barriers and shatter stereotypes in order to positively impact policy making as it affects women in the profession, not only in Nigeria but globally.”
Discussions centered on driving self-development, policy changes, work-life balance, and dismantling intra- and inter-gender barriers. Abia State Chief Judge Hon. Justice Lilian Abai expressed confidence the training would “positively impact lives of participants drawn from the bar and the bench.”
Attendees believe the workshop will enhance their contributions to Nigeria’s legal system while helping aspiring female leaders navigate challenges associated with attaining top positions in the judiciary. The meeting reflects ongoing efforts to promote gender equity and shatter the glass ceiling for women across Nigeria’s legal profession.
