The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that its Federal Capital Territory Command is investigating a case involving the assault of a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, by Alexander Ikwechegh, a federal lawmaker representing Aba North and South Constituency at the House of Representatives.

The incident, captured in a viral video circulating on social media, shows Ikwechegh physically assaulting and verbally threatening Abuwatseya. The altercation allegedly began when the driver asked Ikwechegh to come out and collect the snail he was meant to deliver, which the lawmaker found disrespectful.

In the video, Ikwechegh can be heard making threats such as “I will make you disappear,” “I will tie you up,” and “I will beat you up.” The visibly angry legislator engaged in a heated exchange with the delivery driver before resorting to physical intimidation, slapping the driver multiple times and vowing to make him suffer.

The police, in a statement released on their X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, October 28, confirmed that Abuwatseya had formally reported the case at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters, prompting an investigation by the command.

While TheNigeriaLawyer could not confirm if the assault extended beyond what was shown in the viral video, the footage also captured Ikwechegh daring the driver to record him and petition the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.

The incident has sparked public outrage, with many Nigerians condemning the lawmaker’s actions and calling for justice for the assaulted driver. The case has also raised concerns about the abuse of power by elected officials and the need for accountability.
