The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded Nigeria three points and three goals for the abandoned Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya, which was scheduled to take place on October 15 in Benghazi.

The decision comes after an investigation by the CAF Disciplinary Board into the botched match, where Super Eagles players and staff were left stranded at an abandoned airport for almost a day due to poor treatment by the host country.

CAF found the Libya Football Federation to have breached Article 31 of the African Cup of Nations Regulations as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code. As a result, the match has been declared lost by forfeit by Libya with a score of 3-0 in favor of Nigeria. Additionally, the Libya Football Federation has been ordered to pay a fine of USD 50,000 within 60 days of the notification of the decision.

CAF president, Patrice Motsepe, had earlier stated that the continental body would not tolerate any lack of sportsmanship and unfair treatment in African football. The decision has been welcomed by Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who reacted positively to the ruling.

With the awarded points, Nigeria now has ten points from four games and remains at the top of Group D in the AFCON qualifiers.

The Super Eagles were detained for over 20 hours without food or water upon arriving at Al Abaq airport before the scheduled match, leading to the game’s cancellation.
