The legal team of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has raised alarm over the Department of State Services’ (DSS) decision to block them from visiting their client at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

The move, according to the lawyers, violates subsisting court orders that grant Kanu’s legal representatives and relatives access to him.

In a press release issued on Monday, October 14, 2024, Aloy Ejimakor, Esq., on behalf of Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team, revealed that the DSS has not allowed any visitors to see Kanu since his last court appearance on September 24, 2024. During that appearance, Kanu had demanded the recusal of Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako from his case.

Ejimakor suggested that the DSS’s latest action is connected to Kanu’s successful recusal of Justice Nyako, even though the recusal was subsequently vacated by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

The legal team noted that they had previously filed applications before the Federal High Court to enforce the DSS’s compliance with court-ordered visitations when similar violations occurred. However, those applications have not been scheduled for hearing to date. This, according to Ejimakor, “leaves the uncanny impression that the DSS is above the law or even above the Constitution and the Courts.”

Ejimakor emphasized that one of the reasons for the court-ordered visitations is for Kanu’s relatives and lawyers to interact with him and have proof of his life and well-being. With the DSS now completely blocking access to Kanu, the legal team raised concerns about what the agency might be hiding and questioned whether Kanu is hale and hearty.

The press release was signed by Aloy Ejimakor, Esq., on behalf of Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team.
