Private Ruth Ogunleye, a former female soldier, has called on the Nigerian Army to publish the outcome of its investigation into her allegations of sexual harassment against a senior officer, Colonel I.B. Abdulkareem.

In January 2024, Ogunleye accused Colonel I.B. Abdulkareem, Colonel G.S. Ogor, and Brigadier General I.B. Solebo of making her life unbearable through her TikTok page, @Ogunleyeruthsavage1. She specifically alleged that Abdulkareem made repeated attempts to assault her, administered injections against her will, forcibly removed her from her residence, and confined her to a psychiatric hospital for several months after she rejected his sexual advances.

On Tuesday, the Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, held a press conference where he stated that the outcome of the investigation had invalidated Ogunleye’s claims. Nwachukwu said that after an exhaustive review of the facts, testimonies, and evidence presented, it was determined that Abdulkareem did not commit the offences alleged by Ogunleye. He further noted that medical reports following an evaluation at the National Hospital in Abuja indicated that Ogunleye was suffering from a condition that rendered her medically vulnerable.

In response to the Nigerian Army’s statement, Ogunleye took to her TikTok account to urge the military to publish the outcome of the investigation. She thanked the Nigerian Army and its spokesperson but requested that they post the investigation results on their social media platforms for the whole world to know what truly transpired and what led to her discharge on June 15, 2024.

Ogunleye also called out the Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy, to come out and tell the truth about her involvement in the matter. According to Ogunleye, the minister had requested her to leave the job and submit a voluntary resignation letter, which was then given to the Army. She further claimed that the Chief of Army Staff had called her on July 1 to inform her that her voluntary discharge had been converted to a medical discharge to enable her to benefit from pension and other entitlements.

The former female soldier’s demand for transparency in the handling of her case has raised questions about the Nigerian Army’s investigation process and the role of the Minister of Women Affairs in the matter. The public awaits the Nigerian Army’s response to Ogunleye’s request for the publication of the investigation outcome.
