The “Super Bass” hitmaker, who was born in Trinidad and Tobago, arrived in the United States as an illegal immigrant when she was just five years old. Since then, she has built a successful career in the music industry, but her citizenship status remains unchanged.
During the live session, Minaj expressed her disbelief at the situation, stating, “I’m not a citizen of America. Isn’t that crazy? You would think that with the millions of dollars that I’ve paid in taxes to this country that I would have been given an honorary citizenship many, many, many thousands of years ago.”
This is not the first time Minaj has spoken out about her immigration experience. In 2018, she criticized the Trump administration’s controversial immigration policies at the U.S.-Mexican border, which saw migrant children being separated from their parents.
Minaj took to social media to share her own story, writing, “I came to this country as an illegal immigrant @ 5 years old. I can’t imagine the horror of being in a strange place & having my parents stripped away from me at the age of 5. This is so scary to me. Please stop this. Can you try to imagine the terror & panic these kids feel right now? Not knowing if their parents are dead or alive, if they’ll ever see them again… đşđ¸.”
