The Department of State Services (DSS) has been accused of arresting Dr. Abubakar Alkali, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Petroleum & Gas Engineering at Baze University in Abuja.

According to Abuja-based lawyer Deji Adeyanju, Dr. Alkali was allegedly abducted by DSS operatives three weeks ago and taken to Sokoto State for supporting the recent #EndBadGovernance protest.

The nationwide anti-hunger and hardship protest, which later became known as the #EndBadGovernance Movement, took place between August 1 and 10. While protesters were protected in some parts of the country, security operatives cracked down on them in other areas, with many arrested and arraigned in court for various offences.

Adeyanju stated that Dr. Alkali has been in custody since his alleged abduction by the DSS. Attempts to reach the DSS for confirmation were unsuccessful, as the organization currently has no official spokesperson, and a text message sent to their hotline remained unanswered at press time.

The arrest of Dr. Alkali raises concerns about the freedom of expression and the right to peaceful protest in the country. The #EndBadGovernance Movement aimed to highlight issues of poverty, hunger, and poor governance affecting citizens across Nigeria. The alleged crackdown on supporters of the protest by security agencies has drawn criticism from human rights activists and civil society organizations.
