The recent arrest of Alhaji Bashir Hadejia, a former special adviser to the Minister of State for Defence and ex-Zamfara Governor Bello Matawalle, has ignited a firestorm of reactions across Nigeria.

Hadejia, known as the “Villa Boy” for his close ties to the presidency, was arrested on Monday by security operatives for alleged treason and subversion against the state.

A search warrant issued by the FCT Police Command on August 12, 2024, accused Hadejia of “treason and subversion against the state.” Videos have emerged showing the suspect displaying what appears to be gold bars with the image of former Libyan leader Muammar Ghadaffi, claiming a total of one tonne of 24-carat gold. The gold bars were labeled as belonging to the “Central Bank of Libya.”

Following Hadejia’s arrest, photos and videos have surfaced depicting his connections to prominent politicians and celebrities. Photos show Hadejia accompanying then-Governor Matawalle to present gold bars to former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2020, and he is seen in a handshake with current President Bola Tinubu. Hadejia also appears in photos with Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru. He facilitated meetings between the Arewa Consultative Forum, northern politicians, and President Tinubu. Popular Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Kwam 1 dedicated a track in his Timeless album extolling Hadejia as a friend and ally of politicians.

The arrest has sparked strong reactions from the public and stakeholders. Many Nigerians on social media are demanding answers and more information from authorities, questioning Hadejia’s connections to top government officials. Journalist Franklin Ude claims Hadejia is being persecuted by his former boss Matawalle, but others argue the arrest should not be linked to the minister. An aide to Matawalle denies any connection between the minister and Hadejia, stating they will let the law take its course.

The Northern Elders Forum spokesperson Abdul-Azeez Suleiman expressed deep concern, calling the revelations “appalling” and a threat to Nigeria’s stability. He commended security agencies but emphasized the need for deeper action. Arewa Youths Consultative Forum President-General Yerima Shettima described the arrest as a positive development in the fight against terrorism, urging thorough investigation and prosecution.

The National Chairman of the Northern Comrades Movement of Nigeria, Jabir Yaro, called for a full investigation to ascertain the truth.
