South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has waded into the heated debate surrounding the eligibility of Miss SA 2024 pageant finalist, Chidimma Adetshina, to compete in the national competition.

The 23-year-old law student and model, born in Soweto to a Nigerian father and a South African mother of Mozambican descent, has faced a barrage of xenophobic backlash over her nationality.

The controversy reached new heights when a video of Chidimma celebrating with Nigerian members of her family went viral, prompting calls for her disqualification from the pageant. Responding to a question on social media, Minister McKenzie stated, “We truly cannot have Nigerians compete in our Miss SA competition.” However, he added that he would gather more information before commenting further.

The minister’s remarks have drawn criticism from some quarters, with accusations of discrimination and unfairness. When challenged by a social media user, McKenzie defended his stance, saying, “That video raises legitimate suspicion.” He emphasized that he would seek out all the facts before providing a definitive answer.

The controversy has sparked a broader debate about nationality, identity, and representation in South Africa’s beauty pageants. As the nation grapples with issues of inclusivity and diversity, the Miss SA organization has yet to issue an official statement on Chidimma Adetshina’s eligibility.
