The race to become elected to serve in any office starts from a personal belief that one has the capacity to represent a particular group/class of interest, and a dream to lead the advancement of such group/class of interest with the consent and approval of its members. Once that is established, the candidate then begins consultation with close stakeholders of such interest group (Leaders, Elders, Colleagues, Friends, Allies, et al) on the possibility of a successful conquest in the event of an election. Then the campaign begins, the candidate has to reach out to majority members of such interest group seeking their support towards the achievement of that desire. And when an election is finally conducted, the candidate’s fate is left to the vote of the members to decide the best man amongst all who contenders to represents their interest.
Such is the case in the just concluded Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) national election, conducted once every two years to elect members of its national executive committee (President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, 3rd Vice President, General Secretary, Assistant General Secretary, Treasure, Welfare Secretary, Publicity Secretary and Assistant Publicity Secretary). With over Seventy Thousand (70,000) eligible voters spread across over one hundred and twenty (120) branches across the country, any one throwing his/her hat into the race ought to be prepared to have one interface or the other with the over one hundred and fifty thousand (150,000) lawyers in Nigeria.
During these interfaces with colleagues and branches, friendships, bonds and boundaries are tested, not by a weakness or strength of any particular candidate in the race, but solely due to difference in choice of a candidate. In order to win this race, every team comes up with its best strategy to persuade the majority of the eligible voters to tow their path, while the members being persuaded look out for the team who knows the road to follow, this has been the entanglement till 20th July, 2024 when the polls were open for election.
And so it was that after the NBA national election of 20th July, 2024, Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe (SAN) emerged President, Sabastine Anyia 1st Vice President, Mrs Bolatumi Olasunbo Animashaun 2nd Vice President, Mrs Zainab Aminu Garba, 3rd Vice President, Dr. Mobolaji Idris Ojibara, General Secretary, Henry Barnabas Ehi Assistant General Secretary, Mrs Blessing Imo Udofa-Poromon Treasurer, Mr. Nyada Auta, Welfare Secretary, Mrs. Bridget Ijeoma Edokwe Publicity Secretary, and Miss Ebiere Emmanuella Ekpese as Asst. Publicity Secretary.
This writer can testify that it has not being an easy campaign train for all the contenders who threw their hat into the race, and so I pause for a moment to give a resounding round of applause to each and every one of the candidate (Bravo! Bravo!! Bravo!!!). Every candidate was good with his/her own peculiar, unique and novel ideas to advance the legal profession, and if you ask me, the election was a no victor, no vanquish situation, as the Nigeria Bar Association is still blessed to have such quality of legal practitioners in its fold.
And now the end of the race has come, we may have had differing opinions and choices during the campaign which is normal considering we are legal practitioners, it is however important to remember that in our differences, there is unity of purpose ‘love for and advancement of the legal profession’ and so in the words of the President Elect of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN “the winners must celebrate moderately, because there is a task ahead of fulfilling the contents of their manifestoes, we must be magnanimous in victory and considerate to those who lost, as we need all hands on deck for a better bar and to achieve that which we have promised… we must therefore roll upour sleeves, as those who gave us the mandate, expect us to deliver solutions to identified challenges”
