The Election Appeal Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has allowed the appeal of Mbamala Chukwuemeka, a candidate who was previously disqualified from contesting for the position of Treasurer in the forthcoming NBA election.

The Election Appeal Committee, comprising Usman Sule SAN (Chairman), Mrs. Folashade Ali SAN (Alternate Chair), Dr. Agada Elachi SAN, Adizua Okoroafor Esq, Matthew Osume Esq, Amina Senchi (Mrs), and Stella Owu (Secretary), conducted a thorough review of Mbamala’s appeal and recognized his eligibility to contest for the Treasurer position.

Mbamala expressed his gratitude to the members of the Election Appeal Committee for their broadminded approach to dispensing fair justice, even in the face of adversity. He also extended his appreciation to senior lawyers, learned friends, and all his supporters who stood by him during the period of disqualification.

The candidate acknowledged the administration of Olu Akpata, the immediate past President of the NBA, for initiating a separate appeal committee, distinct from the election committee, during his tenure. This move has proven to be a crucial step in ensuring a fair and impartial appeals process.

Mbamala had been disqualified by the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA) for failing to fulfill certain constitutional requirements. Dissatisfied with the decision, he appealed against the disqualification on the grounds of “ERROR IN LAW.”

The Election Appeal Committee’s decision to allow Mbamala’s appeal has demonstrated their role as the last hope for disqualified candidates in the NBA National elections. The committee’s thorough review and recognition of Mbamala’s eligibility have been widely welcomed by the legal community.

Mbamala expressed his determination to take the Association’s Treasury to a safer and more dignified position for the betterment of all members, with the humane support of whoever emerges as the next President of the NBA. He has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of goodwill and support via phone calls, text messages, and emails, indicating a united Bar behind his candidacy.

As the NBA election draws near, the clearance of Mbamala Chukwuemeka by the Election Appeal Committee has injected a new dynamic into the race for the Treasurer position. The legal community eagerly awaits the outcome of the election, with hopes for a fair and transparent process that upholds the integrity of the profession.
