A senior lawyer, Eli Ugwu, Esq. has been shot dead in Kogi State shortly after delivering ransom payment to kidnappers who abducted his cousin.

The tragic incident has thrown the people of Nsukka, Enugu State, into deep mourning. Initial reports indicated Eli Ugwu, Esq. was killed by the kidnappers after paying the ransom. However, emerging information suggests he was accidentally shot by police officers as he was exiting the bush with his freed cousin.
A fearful senior lawyer who opted to remain anonymous told our correspondent, “He had already successfully delivered the ransom and was coming out with the victim when policemen shot them. Eli was shot dead but his cousin, the kidnap victim, is responding to treatment.”
Eli Ugwu, Esq. was a respected member of the Nigerian Bar Association’s Nsukka branch. The circumstances around the deadly shooting remain unclear.
The Kogi State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Eli Ugwu, Esq.’s tragic death has compounded the grief of his family and left the community in Nsukka devastated over the loss of one of their own.
