Amid the rising security challenges bedevilling the country, the Nigeria Correctional Service said it had mapped out plans across the custodial centres for emergency situations.

The spokesperson for NCoS, Umar Abubakar, made this known to our correspondent on Friday.

The state of Nigeria’s security apparatus was brutally laid bare when terrorists invaded the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre in Abuja in July 2022, freeing their incarcerated fighters, other hardened criminals, convicted persons and suspects awaiting trial for various offences.

The ease of the attack, the failure of intelligence and the inability of the security agencies to mount a quick response, demonstrate the increasing helplessness of the government to protect the country and the people.

However, Abubakar said the service had rejigged its rapid response through the provision of logistics to the Armed Squad units in all the Commands to speedily respond to emergency situations in the custodial centres with any challenge.

He said, “For the avoidance of doubt, we have been proactive in maintaining water-tight security in and around our facilities. Furthermore, we have up-scaled intelligence gathering through overt and covert means to nip in the bud any plan to distort the peace and security of our facilities.

“In this regard, we have improved the capacities of our intelligence operatives through training and constant retraining. We are also equipping them with modern technology that will aid them in their duties.

“Again, the Service has also deployed the use of technology in surveillance. There is a situation room located at the National headquarters here in Abuja, where custodial centres are monitored in real-time.”
