The United Kingdom and Nigeria are set to sign a landmark “Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership (ETIP)” agreement on Tuesday, aimed at boosting economic ties between both nations.

The deal will be inked by Nigeria’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anitie and UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Kemi Badenoch.

Under the terms, Nigeria will work to remove barriers for British legal professionals to practice international law.

According to the statement, the new trade partnership aims to eliminate barriers in the legal services and film industry by allowing UK lawyers to practise international law in Nigeria and foster collaboration between the film and media industry in both countries.  

  • It stated, “It will see Nigeria commit to working towards removing barriers preventing UK lawyers from practising international and foreign law in Nigeria, a step that could significantly increase UK legal services exports. It will also pave the way for further collaboration in the film and media industry and encourage world-leading UK education providers to offer high-quality education in Nigeria.” 

Total bilateral trade currently stands at £7 billion. Badenoch expressed confidence that the ETIP agreement will unlock more opportunities for both countries and enhance relations with one of the world’s largest economies.

Uzoka-Anitie stated the elevated partnership will now focus more on driving shared economic prosperity through increased market access, supporting local businesses, more investments and job creation.

Apart from trade discussions, Badenoch’s itinerary includes touring the site of a new Charterhouse UK independent school – the first such school in West Africa.

She will also engage with Nigeria’s Finance Minister and Central Bank Governor to address existing barriers for UK companies.
