A strange request was made to the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, by a young Nigerian man seeking asylum abroad.

According to a social media post by SP Hundeyin, the man approached him asking to be declared wanted by the police. “Please, declare me wanted!” the man pleaded.

SP Hundeyin was taken aback by the bizarre appeal. “I was stupefied. I blinked and looked at him again. ‘What did you say?’ I asked,” he wrote.

The man repeated his appeal – “Please, I want you to declare me wanted.” When asked why, the man explained that he was applying for asylum from an embassy and had told them during his interview that he was being persecuted in Nigeria to the point of being declared wanted by the police.

“They now asked for evidence of the ‘wanted’ declaration. I can easily do the artwork but I know they will come and verify. That is why I want it from the source,” the man told the baffled police spokesperson.

SP Hundeyin mused in his social media post, “And I thought I had seen it all.” His experience highlights the strange tactics some Nigerian asylum seekers resort to in an attempt to bolster their cases with foreign governments. Fabricating persecution is fraud, SP Hundeyin said.

The Lagos State Police Command could not be reached for further comment on the incident.
