The National Judicial Council (NJC) has stated it is unaware of the shortlist of 22 Court of Appeal justices nominated by the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) for elevation to the Supreme Court.

NJC’s Director of Information, Soji Oye, revealed that the list of nominees released by the FJSC on Thursday has not been brought to the notice of the NJC yet.

The FJSC list contains 22 names shortlisted for the NJC’s consideration to fill vacancies at the apex court bench. It reportedly includes regional distribution of candidates across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.

However, the NJC which vets and approves nominations to superior courts says it is still unaware of the new FJSC shortlist.

This development comes after reports in September that the Supreme Court was down to 10 out of a constitutional strength of 21 justices. The FJSC’s latest move aims to fill vacant positions, subject to NJC and legislative approval.

As the body mandated to recommend judicial appointments, the NJC’s statement indicates the process may still be in early stages. Stakeholders hope further details will emerge to clarify the status of nominations to reinforce the understaffed Supreme Court.
