The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has debunked reports of insufficient currency notes circulating in the country.

In a statement on Wednesday, CBN spokesperson Isa Abdulmumin stated there are adequate stock levels to facilitate economic activities.

The CBN said its investigation revealed perceived cash scarcity in some locations is largely due to high volume withdrawals by banks from CBN branches and panic withdrawals by customers. It assured the public there are enough notes despite concerns over availability.

Abdulmumin noted CBN branches nationwide are working to guarantee seamless circulation of cash within their states. He advised against panic withdrawals, saying there is sufficient stock to enable financial transactions.

Recently, there have been growing complaints of cash shortages at banks, ATMs and other outlets in major Nigerian cities. Customers have reported difficulties accessing cash for transactions.

However, the CBN insists the issues are not caused by inadequate currency notes. It blames bank branch withdrawals and alarmist customer actions for any temporary shortfalls in some areas.

The apex bank called on Nigerians to avoid panic withdrawals and instead embrace alternative payment options to reduce reliance on physical cash. It remains committed to ensuring sufficient liquidity levels in the financial system.
