The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, has warned that excessive delay in dispensing justice erodes public confidence in the judiciary and can lead to anarchy.

Justice Tsoho gave this caution on Thursday in Uyo at a sensitization seminar for Federal High Court judges organized by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC).

The Chief Judge identified case backlogs arising from undue delays as one of the biggest challenges facing the justice system. He advised judges to guard against delays that undermine trust in the judiciary.

Justice Tsoho noted that when a bank fails, it takes a huge part of the economy down with it. Loss of faith in the justice sector, according to him, is a recipe for anarchy.

He emphasized that ensuring speedy resolution of cases involving banks and depositors is vital for financial system stability. The public must have confidence that courts can timely dispense justice over bank disputes.

The Chief Judge charged judges to uphold efficiency in adjudicating cases, saying inordinate delays leading to case backlogs cannot be allowed to persist. This steadily erodes public trust in the ability of the justice system to deliver.

Justice Tsoho urged participants to apply lessons from the seminar to eliminate bottlenecks causing paralysis in the judicial process. Judges have a duty to enhance the integrity of the courts through timely justice delivery.

The NDIC organized the sensitization to enrich judges’ knowledge and promote sound regulation of banks. The Chief Judge commended the workshop focused on strengthening the judiciary to boost public confidence.
