Lagos, Nigeria – Controversy has erupted within the legal community over the response of the Nigerian Bar Association’s (NBA) Lagos Branch to a news report published by a blogger and lawyer, Emeka Nwadioke.

Nwadioke, who runs the popular legal news blog City Lawyer, recently published a report titled “Kidnapping: NBA Abandons Young Lawyer After Mob Attack.” The report alleged that the NBA Lagos Branch had abandoned Uduak Adams, a young lawyer who was nearly lynched by an angry mob over kidnapping allegations.

In response, the NBA Lagos Branch issued a rebuttal denying the allegations and demanding Nwadioke retract the story and apologize. The branch threatened legal action through its Publicity Secretary, Omoniyi Onabule.

Nwadioke subsequently published the branch’s rebuttal on his blog, allowing a right of reply. However, some lawyers on the NBA Lagos WhatsApp platform demanded Nwadioke apologize and retract the story. A few lawyers defended Nwadioke’s press freedom.

In a surprising turn of events, the NBA Lagos officials removed Nwadioke from the WhatsApp platform for failing to apologize. Onabule announced that Nwadioke and his City Lawyer blog posts were now barred from all NBA Lagos platforms.

Many lawyers have condemned the NBA Lagos Branch’s high-handedness, arguing their action infringes on Nwadioke’s freedom of expression. While there were complaints that Mr. Nwadioke did not obtain the side of the story from the Excos (executive committee members of the NBA Lagos branch), They noted the branch officials had constituted themselves as judges in their own case instead of seeking redress through civil litigation.

Critics argue the NBA Lagos Branch’s clampdown reinforces the Nigerian government’s increasing attempts to gag journalists and bloggers. They urged lawyers to defend press freedom rather than suppress it.

There are concerns the branch’s unilateral sanctions against Nwadioke could set a dangerous precedent of intolerance. Analysts say disagreements should be resolved amicably through constructive engagement.

While the facts of the original report are disputed, observers note stifling contrarian views increases polarization. Many have called on the national NBA leadership to intervene and protect members’ constitutional rights.

This emerging controversy has ignited debate on how professional associations like the NBA should handle internal dissent and critiques from watchdog platforms like City Lawyer. The larger issues of press freedom, free speech and the role of civic activists are at stake.
