Prominent Nigerian lawyer and Human Rights Activist, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN, has expressed disappointment and concern over the inauguration speech delivered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on May 29, 2023.

In a statement Adegboruwa described the speech as uninspiring and lacking in addressing critical issues facing the nation.

President Tinubu, a former Governor of Lagos and the National Leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC), took office as the 16th President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria amidst high expectations from the Nigerian people.

As the one who played a pivotal role in selling former President Muhammadu Buhari as the agent of change, Adegboruwa criticized the lack of substantial change during Buhari’s tenure and expressed concern that the same may be true for President Tinubu’s administration.

Highlighting President Tinubu’s political credentials and his past persecution under previous regimes, Adegboruwa noted that it is surprising the President did not present immediate solutions to the pressing issues faced by the country. A major concern highlighted by Adegboruwa was the lack of a comprehensive plan to address the ongoing challenges in the power sector, a key obstacle to Nigeria’s economic progress. The Senior Lawyer also criticized the President’s failure to outline programs for electoral reforms, despite widespread reports of malpractices and voter intimidation during the 2023 elections.

He said, “For instance, electricity has been the major clog to the wheel of Nigeria’s economic progress and there is nothing in the President’s speech on how he hopes to tackle and defeat the monsters of the power sector other than stating that he would continue with his predecessor’s programmes on infrastructure. Also in his speech, President Tinubu hailed the 2023 elections as the best that Nigeria has ever had, contrary to the motley of evidence and reports of electoral malpractices, voter intimidation, violence and thuggery and failure by the electoral umpire to follow its own rules and guidelines. In one absurd instance in Adamawa State, a Resident Electoral Commissioner declared one of the candidates in the President’s political party as winner of an inconclusive election and yet the President in his speech has no single programme for electoral reforms.”

Adegboruwa further pointed out President Tinubu’s silence on critical issues such as restructuring, fiscal federalism, resource control, devolution of powers, and the creation of state police. These issues were central to Tinubu’s activism in the past, and Adegboruwa suggested that the President’s silence indicates a departure from his previous stance. Additionally, the lawyer raised concerns over the lack of concrete details regarding the removal of fuel subsidies and the lingering issue of Naira redesign, which has adversely affected the national economy.

Addressing the dire state of Nigeria’s road network, which has resulted in loss of lives, Adegboruwa criticized the President’s failure to prioritize this issue in his speech. While congratulating President Tinubu on his inauguration, Adegboruwa urged the new administration to address these critical issues promptly and communicate its stance to all Nigerians.

Adegboruwa’s statement concludes with a call for Nigeria’s progress and expresses the hope that the new administration will take decisive action to address the country’s pressing challenges.
